About PSAT

The PSAT, or Preliminary SAT, is a standardized test that is primarily used as a practice test for the SAT. There are 3 different versions of the PSAT. They are designed for students in different grades and serve slightly different purposes. Here are the main versions:

PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test):

• This is the most well-known version of the PSAT.

• It is typically taken by juniors, although sophomores might also take it.

• The scores from this test are used by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation to determine eligibility for the National Merit Scholarship Program for juniors.

• This test serves as a solid practice for the SAT.

PSAT 10:

• This test is very similar to the PSAT/NMSQT in terms of content and format, but it's specifically for sophomores.

• Scores from the PSAT 10 aren’t used for National Merit Scholarship consideration.

• It's primarily a practice test to provide sophomores with a sense of where they stand in terms of college readiness.

PSAT 8/9:

• This test is for younger students, typically those in 8th and 9th grades.

• It serves as a baseline measure of college and career readiness.

• It’s not tied to any scholarship programs and is meant mainly as a diagnostic tool to help students, teachers, and parents understand where students are in their educational journey.

All versions of the PSAT provide scores that can help students understand their strengths and weaknesses, and they are all good practice for the main SAT test. However, only the PSAT/NMSQT is used for National Merit Scholarship considerations.
